What is the Fastest Steam Locomotive in the World?


The highest speed ever credited to a steam locomotive is 201 km/h (125 mph) over 402 m (440 yd) by the London North Eastern Railway Class A4 (4-6-2) No. 4468 Mallard (later numbered 60022), which hauled seven coaches weighing 243 tonnes gross down Stoke Bank, near Essendine, between Grantham, Lincolnshire, and Peterborough, on July 3, 1938.
